What was needed

A hotel never closes. The Habitel substation combines dry-type and oil-filled transformers, which call for two different maintenance protocols on two different calendars. Both had to be worked on without any guest noticing and without lifts or security systems losing power.

Dry and oil: two machines, two protocols

A dry-type and an oil-filled transformer do the same job but are maintained differently. The dry-type is cleaned, its connections checked and its insulation measured; the oil-filled one additionally requires fluid analysis, level checks and seal integrity control. They run on different intervals and they fail in different ways.

When a substation combines both — as at the Habitel, with 300 kVA dry-type and 500 kVA oil-filled — the oil unit is usually the one that falls behind, because its maintenance is more laborious and easier to defer. The consequence is that the largest machine, the one carrying the most load, ends up the worst attended.

Result

The entire substation was left fully up to date on maintenance, with separate protocols for the dry and the oil-filled units, without interrupting hotel operations.
